On the last day of the summer holidays, around 300 people packed in and around the concourse down on Grahame Park Estate to watch local children and young people run the 60m dash.
Such was the enthusiasm for the Urban Gamez this year, there were more children wanting to take part than there were races. Around 131 children registered in advance to take part in the 60m race.
Luckily, there were plenty of other activies for young people, such as a climbing frame and ‘rodeo’ style surfboard.
We were also delighted to be joined by the new Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Reuben Thompstone, on his first engagement to support Barnet Homes.
The Mayor said: “I am really looking forward to getting to know people I’ll no doubt get to meet as I go around Barnet Homes’ estates and communities. But this event is of particular interest to me, as I am a teacher by profession and want to use my Mayoral year to shine a light on young people’s issues in Barnet.”
The Mayor, who was joined by his four-year-old son, also added that his two chosen charities this year are Kisharon, a Jewish Charity which provides services for people with learning difficulties and their families.
The Mayor of Barnet is also supporting Live Unlimited, a new charity that supports children and young people leaving the care system in Barnet.
And our contractors, WSP, Morgan Sindall, Lift Specialist and Purdy did us proud by sponsoring the Gamez and contributing to building the local community spirit. We thank them for their generous contribution.
We look forward to welcoming another generation of young sporting heroes at the Urban Gamez 2019.
