Barnet Homes tenants Paul and his wife Jo have lived in their one bedroom first floor maisonette in Burnt Oak for ten years. The couple recently won the ‘Good Neighbour’ Award  at our Community Awards in January.

Q How does it feel to win the Good Neighbour’ Award?
Paul: I was really quite surprised, but proud as well. I love interacting with people in my community and my neighbours, so it feels good.

Q: Who nominated you?

Paul: I’m not sure, but maybe my downstairs neighbour, or the elderly lady next door, or someone I’ve helped in our street!

I generally try to help anyone who needs it. Our street has a mix of residents: some Barnet Homes tenants, some private tenants, and some homeowners. They’re all nice.

Q: Do you enjoy living in your area?
Paul: Yes, I love it. Everywhere has problems, but overall, this area is good.

Q: What did you and Jo both do before you retired?

Paul: I worked in the ventilation industry.

Jo: I worked as a farm shop manager and then in a care home.

Q: What do you do in your free time?
A: We used to walk a lot, but now we mostly take our dog, Dexter, to the park. He’s a three-legged French bulldog we rescued four years ago. We also love listening to music, everything from the A’s to the Zee’s – Abba to Zappa!
