Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis has had a big impact on Barnet’s residents, with higher food and energy costs and soaring rents in the private sector.

Across London, local authorities have seen increased applications for housing assistance. In Barnet, 47% more housing applications were opened in 2023 than in 2022.

Barnet Homes works hard to house people in need, but there is not enough social housing available, so we must consider other options – such as affordable homes in the private rented sector as well as temporary accommodation. However, because renting is becoming less affordable, we must increasingly find properties outside of Barnet, and outside of London.

Where residents need help with their housing, Barnet Homes may be able to help, using:
• Dedicated mediation and prevention services that aim to keep people in their current home where it is safe to do so.
• The Let2Barnet landlord incentive scheme can provide a financial incentive to private sector landlords, to encourage them to house our housing applicants.
• BOOST offers employment support and digital skills workshops to residents.

Barnet Homes also collaborates with organisations such as New Horizons youth centre to provide integrated support to young
people.
