Residents may have heard that from 2016, for four years, social housing rents will decrease by 1% each year. This is not a mistake and it is really happening!
Last year the Government announced 1% rent decrease from April 2016 for social housing tenants. This means that for the next four years your rent will decrease by 1% each year instead of increasing as it has done in previous years. You will receive a rent update letter that will explain to you what your new rent will be and how it was calculated.
Your Housing Benefit will automatically be adjusted to reflect the new rent changes. However, if your circumstances change or if you feel your Housing Benefit award is incorrect, you can contact the Housing Benefit department on the contact details in your award letter.
No further announcements have been made as to what will happen to rents after 2020 but as soon as we have more information we will keep you informed. If you have any questions about your rent or ways to pay your rent please contact the team on 020 8359 4374.
