Relationship breakdown and leaving home
If you are experiencing a relationship breakdown and have been asked to leave the family home, find out about services that could provide practical advice and help find accommodation.
If you are having issues at home
Leaving home is a major decision that will give you many responsibilities you probably have not dealt with before. Leaving home without careful planning beforehand can easily leave
you homeless. If you feel that you must leave home immediately, for example due to violence or abuse, you should seek assistance right away.
Childline is a free helpline for children and young people. Call 0800 1111.
Call 020 3874 5003 for Solace Women’s Aid Barnet. The service is available to women over 16 years old who have been victim to domestic abuse. They offer advocacy, support, counselling, and family services. They also coordinate refuge accommodation.
Shelter can provide advice over the phone on 0808 800 4444 or at a local advice centre. They can also help you find somewhere to stay if you are in need of shelter urgently.
New Horizon Youth Centre can provide referrals to accommodation, employment and training support, advice, and family mediation services.

Applying to Barnet Homes for assistance
You can approach our Housing Options service for assistance if you are unable to stay in your home. We will give you advice about finding somewhere to live and may make referrals to other organisations. We will open a homelessness application for you, and if you are eligible for assistance and are homeless or threatened with homelessness within 56 days you will be helped by one of your frontline teams. If you qualify for assistance with rehousing, we may provide emergency accommodation and we can help you move to a property in the private rented sector. Phone Housing Options on 020 8610 3539 for advice and assistance.
We have specialist officers who work with young people and their parents/carers to help them talk about the problems they are having at home. Providing there is no risk of harm, our aim is to help the whole family come to an agreement that allows the young person to remain in the family home.
