A major milestone in the construction of 28 much-needed affordable homes at the Broadfields estate was celebrated with a tree planting ceremony held at the site.
The Broadfields housing project is part of Barnet Council’s ambitious plan to deliver 1,000 new council homes by 2026. The scheme, partly funded by the Greater London Authority’s (GLA) Homes for Londoners: Affordable Homes Programme, has been designed to meet the GLA’s high standards for funding and design.
Construction partners Bugler, employer’s agents Potter Raper and representatives from Barnet Council and The Barnet Group gathered at the event to celebrate the completion of the highest point of the new buildings. This symbolic moment underscores the progress made toward addressing the housing needs of Barnet residents while contributing to the improvements to the Broadfields estate.
The development comprises 28 high-quality homes, split between two thoughtfully designed buildings – one three-storey and one four-storey – that integrate seamlessly with the existing estate. The scheme includes a mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and wheelchair-adapted flats, alongside enhancements to public spaces, such as expanded pedestrian pathways, new areas for play, and refurbished facilities.
Additional features of the development include 31 parking spaces—three with accessibility features and electric vehicle charging, 49 secured cycle storage spaces, and a unified communal refuse collection.
Cllr Ross Houston, representing Barnet Council at the event, said, “This project represents a significant step toward providing safe, affordable housing for our residents, while enhancing the Broadfields community. The topping-out is a proud moment for everyone involved.”
Andy Bugler, Bugler Group CEO said, “On behalf of the Bugler Developments team, it was great to welcome representatives from our client, Barnet Homes, in addition to the London Borough of Barnet and employers agent Potter Raper, to our Broadfields project. We have a long-standing relationship building high quality homes in the borough, with this our 13th project in recent years. The team spent the morning talking through progress on our development of 28 new homes, which we look forward to completing in the new year.”
Practical completion of the project is anticipated by March 2025, paving the way for future residents to move into these modern, energy-efficient homes.
