Barnet Homes

Swapping homes

You can arrange your own move to another council property by swapping your home with other tenants.

This arrangement, called mutual exchange, enables you to swap your home not only with Barnet tenants, but any housing association or council tenant anywhere in the United Kingdom.

You can find mutual exchange partners through HomeSwapper (external link). You can also advertise in local newspapers or newsagents for tenants to swap with.

If you exchange with a tenant who is in a smaller overcrowded property, you may qualify for a cash grant under the Fresh Start scheme.

Please contact us if you wish to exchange your home. You must receive written permission from both landlords before you complete the exchange.

Alternatively, if you have an exchange partner, you can fill out, sign and return our online form.

We may refuse permission for a mutual exchange if:

• we have a court order against you to repossess your home or have served notice on you
• your property is substantially larger than the proposed tenant needs
• your property would become overcrowded
• your property is designed for someone with a special need that the proposed tenant does not have.

If you owe us rent, we will only give you permission to exchange if you first clear your debt.
