Condensation

If your home is damp, it is most likely to be due to condensation.

This happens when warm, damp air (such as steam from cooking) meets a cold surface such as a window, wall or water pipe.

Condensation can cause mould on walls and ceilings, and damage clothes, bedding and carpets.

To prevent problems or reduce them:

• keep lids on saucepans and switch off kettles as soon as they boil
• dry clothes outdoors wherever possible –otherwise use well-ventilated rooms
• if you use a tumble drier, vent it outside
• mop up any condensation on windowsills and regularly wipe off any mould
• control where excess moisture goes
• close kitchen and bathroom doors to prevent steam going into other colder rooms
• open kitchen and bathroom windows so that steam can escape, or fit an extractor fan
• open windows for a while each day to allow the air to change
• do not block vents.
