Barnet Homes is responsible for collecting your rent on behalf of the council. Your tenancy agreement states your rent is due in advance on or before each Monday. You must pay your rent every week, fortnight or month in advance (for the week, fortnight or month to come). If you are having difficulty paying, please contact us and we can make an agreement for you to pay back arrears. Providing you keep to your agreement no further action will be taken.
Your weekly rent may include:

Net rent - the weekly charge for your tenancy.

Water rate charges – if you do not have a water meter, we collect the charges for water and drainage costs on behalf of the water company in your area.

Heating and/or hot water – if there is a central communal system.

Service charges – for shared lighting, grounds maintenance, caretaking and supporting people (sheltered housing officer and lifeline alarm).
The rent increases yearly from the first Monday in April and is calculated by a government formula that applies to all social landlords.
Who collects the rent?
Barnet Homes is responsible for collecting your rent on behalf of the council. It also collects water rates on behalf of water companies and everyone has to pay these in full. However, if your home has a water meter, your water company will bill you directly.
How are service charges worked out?
Service charges are calculated on a fixed rate basis by calculating the total cost of providing each service for the council’s housing stock and then dividing this equally between the tenants who receive the services.
By comparing the amount shown for services on the front of this letter with the table below, you can work out which services we have taken account of in your weekly charges:
