We got summer off to a roaring start for residents by holding two new community events, Know How and the new style Community Hub.
The first ever ‘Know How’ was a new free event to help inspire local young people (8-19 and up to 25 with a disability) to achieve their goals and get ahead. Organisations including youth charity Exposure, DJ and MC Academy, Barnet Football Club and Nutmeg were all on hand to host activities and giveaways.
The event took place on the first hot Saturday of the school summer holidays, July 26, at Middlesex University’s Hendon campus. Local rapper and poet Mikel Ameen did the hosting honours alongside guest speaker Craig Pinkney, a motivational speaker who focuses on working with youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The busy day also featured performances from up and coming artists Ccane and singer song-writer Ellen Blane. Another highlight included some of the young mentors from the cover of the Spring 2014 edition of Barnet Homes’ residents magazine, At Home, getting certificates for participating in the Aim2Be mentoring project. The weather the following Saturday 2 August, for Barnet Homes new style Community HUB, wasn’t as good but that didn’t stop more than 100 residents turning up for the family fun-filled event.
Staff from our partners Mears and Robert Heath Heating joined Barnet Homes to welcome residents from the Belle Vue Estate and beyond to come and get advice on issues including welfare benefit, repairs and anti-social behaviour.
There was a bouncy castle, mini disco and plenty of other games to keep younger residents busy.
