Hundreds of residents are benefitting from the results of an extreme makeover on their estate thanks to an environmental campaign by Barnet Homes.
Dozens of staff from the north London housing organisation visited the West Hendon Estate, NW9, on Saturday 3 September to carry out jobs such as gardening, planting, cleaning and painting.
The event was the first of two ‘Love where you live’ roadshows with a difference, designed to give estates a facelift this summer. Staff from all sections of the company worked alongside willing residents to give their neighbourhoods a makeover.
Barnet Homes’ Chief Executive, Tracey Lees, said: “We work hard to keep estates clean and green and to a good standard. Our Love where you live events aim to encourage more residents to take pride in their neighbourhood and feel part of their community. It is by working together that we can make a real and lasting difference.”
Residents had the opportunity to meet staff, find out about our services and sign up for training courses on offer from Barnet Homes, as well as volunteering to lend a hand. A barbeque for everyone and free activities for younger residents were laid on in the afternoon.
Half a dozen staff from the local McDonald’s Colindale came to lend a hand to improve the ball park.
The Fire Brigade was also on hand offering free home fire safety checks to residents. Many households took up the offer of a check on the day.
Nico Berkoh, a resident of West Hendon said: “I really enjoyed Saturday’s Love where you live event and so did many of the residents involved. This was an opportunity for us to work and communicate with Barnet Homes staff and other residents.
“I spoke to some afterwards who were really honoured to see Barnet Homes giving the area a good makeover. I think it was a very important and success event, which Barnet Homes should keep up.”
The next ‘Love where you live’ road show will being taking place at Dollis Valley on Saturday 24 September.
